Aurora church to launch Girl Scout program Aug. 12

Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St. in Aurora, will host a Girl Scout program starting this fall.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, registration will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a Girl Scout Creator's League focusing on art education.

Meetings will be held on the second and fourth Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. starting in September.

Girls in sixth to 12th grade are invited. The program is limited to 20 students.

While learning art history and art techniques, students will create their own artworks and crafts in various mediums. Activities will include field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and other area museums and cultural institutions.

The group will also continue the Girl Scout tradition of performing community service projects through art, such as children's workshops, decorations for senior citizen centers and a spring hands-on art fair.

Participants will also support Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois' fall product and cookie sales to raise funds needed for art supplies and field trips.

Membership in Girl Scouts of the USA is required to participate. A fee of $25 includes insurance. Financial aid is available from the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois.

A church statement said the program is designed to help teenage girls de-stress from the pressures of being in middle and high school through the therapeutic benefits of creating art.
