DAR Delivers Over 1,600 Books to Sunny Hill Elementary

Barrington, IL-based Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, organized a book drive for young readers at Sunny Hill Elementary School in Carpentersville, IL, a Barrington District 220 school. The chapter's goal was to send two books home with each of the three hundred students at Sunny Hill for summer reading. The books would be theirs to keep. DAR members, the Gail Borden Public Library of Elgin, IL and Half Price Books of Algonquin, IL collectively donated over 1,600 books.

Each student from Kindergarten through third grade will receive seven books and each fourth through fifth grade student will receive four books. The generosity of the donors enabled the book drive organizers to exceed their goal of two books per student. Donated books range from beginning-level reading to others for older students in both English and Spanish. Over 80 percent of the books are hardcover. A label was placed in each book that includes the DAR logo and Signal Hill Chapter's website address.

Becky Gill, Ed.D., Director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction at Barrington District 220, identified the need for books within the district and was on hand to receive the donation. Sunny Hill Principal Lizzeth Fausto expressed appreciation and Nancy Wadin, Sunny Hill Librarian, was instrumental in recommending book titles.

Becky Gill said, "The donation will provide our students with opportunities to read and learn so much, as well as start a library of their own!"
