'It feels like home': Mother and son reflect on decades of service together at Advocate Sherman Hospital

In 1974, 19-year-old Elvira Castro came to Advocate Sherman Hospital excited to start her first job working in the environmental services department. Nearly 50 years later, the spark of joy she feels working to ensure the hospital is safe and clean for patients and visitors remains, but with an added perk: her youngest son, Robert, is never far.

Much like his mother, Robert Castro's first job was at the Elgin hospital, and he has been there ever since.

He got his start in the food and nutrition department in 2000 and currently works as a supervisor of the patient services team which ensures all patients receive quality and nutritious meals during their stay.

"Patients don't get to control very much when they're in the hospital but one of the few things they can control is food," explains Robert. "I really enjoy making sure the patients can eat the food they want."

Robert says he feels like he grew up at Advocate Sherman. From being born at the hospital, to starting his first job, and even now as he continues to grow in his leadership role and nears his 23rd anniversary on May 23.

All three of Elvira's sons have worked at the hospital over the years, but she says it's special to have Robert continue his career at a place they both call home.

"I love working with the people at Sherman and serving the patients," shares Elvira. "I feel so comfortable here."

Robert credits his mother for instilling strong values in him that have helped him succeed in his career.

"One of the most important things I learned from my mom is her work ethic," reflects Robert. "She and my father were always working, and they taught me to work hard for what I want."

This Mother's Day, Elvira looks forward to enjoying some time well-deserved time off to celebrate the holiday with her sons and grandchildren.
