Elgin financial advisor awarded $15,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual

Celebrating the philanthropic work of its financial advisers, Northwestern Mutual is recognizing the individuals who have shown outstanding volunteerism and leadership through its 2023 Community Service Awards.

Now in its 28th year, the awards program is distributing $270,000 to nonprofits nationwide.

Elgin resident Mark Rizzo, a Financial Adviser at Northwestern Mutual - Chicago, has been named a 2023 Community Service Award winner, receiving a $15,000 grant for the Family Service Association (FSA) of Greater Elgin Area.

"Northwestern Mutual is a company built on helping people, and it is inspiring to see the impact that these financial advisers are making on their communities through selfless contributions," said Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "I'm honored to work alongside these dedicated advisers who embody our company's values and commitment to the communities we serve."

The FSA of Greater Elgin Area is dedicated to accessible, quality, client-centered and holistic behavior health services that support and strengthen individuals and families.

Currently serving as a fund development coordinator and member of the building committee, Rizzo was inspired to join the FSA of Greater Elgin Area after seeking out his own counseling and experiencing the positive impact the organization had on his life.

For 30 years, Rizzo has been sharing his experiences, providing guidelines for fundraising and serving on the board in times of prosperity and budgetary crisis.

"I was involved in the Our Lady of the Angels school fire in 1958 where 92 students and 3 teachers died," said Rizzo. "At the time, there were no counselors available, so I made it my mission to help bring the community the need for and acceptance of mental health therapy. Since the youth are our future, the grant money will be used to provide counseling services to lay the groundwork for their future growth."

Since the program's inception in 1995, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has donated nearly $7 million to nonprofits across the country. In celebrating the volunteer work of its financial advisers, the company deepens its dedication to giving back to the communities it serves.
