Project showcase fuels all-school learning at Grass Lake School

The building was abuzz with energy and activity as the two-day Winter Project Based Learning Showcase preparation began.

Every student at Grass Lake School was a participant in at least one project-based learning project. Many of the projects were interactive displays, while some were "live," with students sharing their expertise with one another.

The topics were varied and demonstrated design elements of a PBL project. Projects incorporated seven design elements that included: a challenging problem or question, student voice/choice, authenticity, sustained inquiry, public product, critique and revision and reflection. The foundation for PBL goals builds on key knowledge, understanding and success skills.

The topics shared from preK through eighth grade were diverse and engaging. Those topics included: Heart Health, Coordinate Graphing with Robots, Playground Dreaming, Interactive Reading Experience, Safety Rules, Get Cooking, Stay Safe, Reading Traps, It's A Dog's World, History Over the Decades, At Your Service, Get Cracking and Musical Nuts.

This is an "all involved" project in the building. All staff - including the office staff, nurse, janitor and lunch staff - are part of the project. The collaboration and involvement supports the belief that people are interdependent in life and need one another's strengths to fulfill some of the big questions they encounter.

When the showcase happened, ownership and sharing was the focus, and more learning was extended and experienced by many on so many different levels.
