DAR unveils plaque at ceremony honoring Nancy Currier Kimball

On Saturday, March 18, members of Barrington-based Signal Hill Chapter and Fox Valley-based Elias Kent Kane Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, joined together in a ceremony to dedicate a commemorative plaque honoring Nancy Currier Kimball.

Nancy Currier Kimball was the daughter of Revolutionary War Patriot William Currier. She lived in a cobblestone house in Elgin for 40 years - from 1846 until her death at age 101 in 1888.

Signal Hill Chapter project chairwoman Jacqueline Marcus introduced the program's four speakers.

Illinois DAR District IV Director Susan Snow spoke on the topic, "DAR and Historic Preservation" and Elgin Area Historical Society President Anne LoCascio gave remarks on "Our Mission: To Preserve Elgin's History."

Elgin History Museum director Elizabeth Marston provided an overview in "Restoration of the Cobblestone: A Labor of Love," and the Elgin Area Historical Society's past-president Alan Walters addressed "The Nancy Kimball Legacy."

The commemorative brass plaque and exhibit was unveiled by Regent Joyce Wright, Signal Hill Chapter NSDAR, together with Regent Karalyn Marselle, Elias Kent Kane Chapter, NSDAR.

The Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House is one of six cobblestone buildings still standing in Elgin.

Located at 302 W. Chicago St., Elgin, the house was built for the widow of one of Elgin's founders, Joseph Kimball, by her sons, William and Samuel. The cobblestone style was reminiscent of New England, where Mrs. Kimball lived prior to her move to Elgin in 1835.

Restoration of the house to preserve its architectural significance and adapt it for re-use was initiated in 2015. The house will operate under the auspices of the Elgin History Museum.

One of the largest patriotic women's service organizations in the world, NSDAR has 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters across the country and several foreign countries. DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service and more.
