Earth Week Naperville celebrates 53rd annual Earth Day with special programs

Naperville Park District and the City of Naperville are collaborating with other local organizations and governments to celebrate Earth Week Naperville.

This community effort commemorates the 53rd annual Earth Day, which is April 22, centered on the theme, "Invest in Our Planet."

The community is invited to participate in special events, volunteer projects, or ongoing eco-friendly initiatives, beginning in March and continuing through May.

Those participating in Earth Week Naperville activities are encouraged to post photos and comments on social media to the hashtags #earthweeknaperville or #investinourplanet.

Local volunteer activities for 2023 in the Naperville area will be listed on the Earth Week Naperville webpage.

Naperville Park District will have volunteer projects such as as litter pickup, mulching, planting and invasive plant removals.

The Conservation Foundation is hosting the annual DuPage River Sweep, and the Forest Preserve Districts of DuPage and Will counties will have volunteer opportunities.

The City of Naperville's annual Arbor Day Tree Sale is available online starting March 20 and running through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 14, with drive-through pickup on Saturday, April 22, at Naperville Public Works Service Center, 180 Fort Hill Drive.

The Naperville Park District and the Naperville Police Department are offering a Shred Event at Centennial Beach parking lot from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 15.

Rain barrels and composters may be ordered for home delivery or pickup from The Conservation Foundation from April through September. A native plant sale also is planned for May at The Conservation Foundation, with details forthcoming.

The Earth Day Fair is returning as an indoor special event at Fort Hill Activity Center on Sunday, April 23, from 1-4 p.m. This free family-friendly event will include children's activities, eco-friendly vendors, free LED light bulbs and native seeds, and tree saplings and the opportunity to learn about the benefits of native plantings, Discover energy-saving items, view a rain barrel and composter, speak with the experts and much more. Area businesses and organizations are invited to sponsor the fair and attend as an exhibitor with educational, interactive activities or demonstrations. An application form is available at napervilleparks.org/earthweeknaperville.

The participation request deadline is Friday, April 7.

Earth Week Naperville 2023 is supported by a coalition of organizations and local governments, including: the City of Naperville, Forest Preserve District of Will County, Forest Preserve District or DuPage County, Naperville Park District, The Conservation Foundation and the Naperville Environment and Sustainability Task Force.
