Applications open for Elgin AAUW scholarships

In 2023, the Elgin Branch of the American Association of University Women is once again offering several $1,000 scholarships.

Applicants must live within a 50-mile radius of Elgin and are currently pursuing her undergraduate degree.

The successful applicant must be 19 years of age by April 1, 2023, identify as female, and has completed at least 12 semester hours (or equivalent) of college credit with a minimum of a cumulative 2.5 grade-point average.

Applications may be found on the Elgin branch website, elginarea-il.aauw.net or at the following locations: Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin; Elgin Community College Financial Aid office, Building B, Room B156, 1700 Spartan Drive; Judson University, 1151 N. State St. in Elgin; and Harper College, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.

The application deadline is Monday, April 3.

The American Association of University Women, founded in 1882, is open to all graduates having associates or equivalent baccalaureate degrees from accredited colleges and universities. An undergraduate student enrolled in a regionally accredited educational institution shall be eligible for student affiliation.

The Elgin Area Branch, organized in 1920 with 40 charter members, offers monthly meetings and presentations.

The next meeting will be "Title IX at 50: Equity, Equality and Confidence" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, via Zoom. A panel will discuss Title IX through the 50 years of its history (1972-2022) with attention to how the legislation has not only codified equal representation for women but also has fostered confident leaders.

On Saturday, Feb. 18, the program will be "By Necessity By Choice," celebrating Susan B. Anthony's birthday. It will be 1 to 3 p.m. at Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St. in Elgin. Dramatic actress Annette Baldwin who will take you on a visual journey of the early story of women in the workplace with Susan B. Anthony as an advocate.

On Sunday, March 5, the Elgin AAUW will join in celebrating International Women's Day from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Gail Borden Public Library's Meadow Community Rooms.
