Barrington Hills' 2022 tax levy reduced once again

Good news for Barrington Hills residents - no increase in the village's 2022 tax levy. At its Nov. 17 meeting, the board of trustees approved the tax levy of $4,845,300, a decrease of $28,500 from the previous year.

"I am happy that, once again, we could do this for our residents. This is the ninth year in a row that we have been able to either reduce or keep the levy flat," said President Brian Cecola. "We are in an inflationary period. I don't know for how much longer we will be able to do this, but we certainly will keep trying."

The village was able to reduce the tax levy by continuing to follow its objective of running government like a business. Being judicious with expenses and implementing strategies that reduce costs, such as going to bid early on projects and negotiating rates, has allowed the village to continue its nine-year streak.

At this same meeting, the board approved the village's 2023 budget. The past few years, the village has expended less than budgeted, which has allowed for continued levy decreases.

The village of Barrington Hills is an appropriations community. It is the Appropriations Ordinance, not the budget, that provides the legal spending authority for each fund. The budget is the financial plan that provides the spending constraints the village places on itself.

Cecola recognized that a great deal of time and effort was put forth in determining the budget and reducing the levy, and he thanked the finance committee and village staff for their many hours and dedication. The village's finance committee is composed of Trustees Bryan Croll, Darby Hills and Laura Ekstrom.
