Advocate Sherman Hospital achieves Magnet recognition for nursing excellence

Advocate Sherman Hospital recently attained Magnet recognition, a testament to its continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Recognition Program distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence.

This credential is the highest honor and gold standard for professional nursing practice and excellence.

Just 9% of U.S. health care organizations have achieved Magnet recognition.

Advocate Sherman was initially Magnet-recognized in 2012 and received re-designation in 2018.

This new re-designation marks Advocate Sherman's third consecutive Magnet recognition, putting the hospital in an elite group.

According to the ANCC, only 2% of U.S. health care organizations have been Magnet-designated three times.

"Magnet recognition is an incredible honor and reflects Advocate Sherman's commitment to a culture of nursing excellence," said Susan Morby, chief nursing officer at Advocate Sherman. "This achievement underscores our nurses' dedication to consistently providing the highest level of care for our patients."

In addition to re-designation Advocate Sherman was awarded nine exemplars, which are specific top-tier practices by the nursing team.

Exemplars included recognition for transformational leadership and evidence-based practice.

Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:

• Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information;

• Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates;

• Higher job satisfaction among nurses;

• Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.

"Advocate Sherman's Magnet re-designation showcases the excellent collaborative partnership between our nurses, medical staff and team members. I am incredibly proud of our amazing Sherman culture, and the entire team for their unwavering dedication to helping our patients and communities live well," said Sheri De Shazo, president at Advocate Sherman.
