Bacoa helps older adults save on prescription drugs

The fall Medicare open enrollment period began Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. For many older adults, finding Medicare coverage that matches their health and financial needs is a challenge filled with red tape and hard-to-understand jargon.

Currently, Senior Health Insurance Program counselors from the nonprofit organization Bacoa are taking appointments to review Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.

Bacoa's SHIP counselors help their clients find the coverage they need at a price they can afford; last year, Bacoa saved older adults $206,392 on prescription drug costs.

Bacoa believes no one should have to decide between putting food on their table and purchasing their medications. Their dedication to helping older adults access health care extends beyond their prescription drug plan reviews.

In partnership with the Barrington Area Library, Bacoa's annual three-part educational workshop, "When I'm 64," led by Bacoa's Social Service Director Sue McNamara and Social Services Manager Diane Vos Hansen, educates the community on Medicare basics, supplements and advantage plans, and Medicare prescription drug plans.

Continuing last year's virtual programming success, Bacoa will offer their prescription drug plan review appointments virtually or by phone, making the program accessible to those lacking transportation or staying home due to health concerns.

"It is critical that people review their drug plans every year," said McNamara. "Medications change, tiers change, and costs change. That's why we make our appointments available to everyone."
