Stars Heading to USA Games

In early September, the Libertyville Stars Special Olympics team received news that not just one, but two athletes from the team would be selected to compete with Team Illinois in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. Over this past season, Alexandrea "Alex" Fix and Catherine Reed have been driving to Normal, IL, once per month to join their teammates on Team Illinois for practice in addition to other commitments.

Alex has been competing in Special Olympics for 17 years. Going to USA Games to her means meeting new friends, spending time with her teammates, and having her family and friends there to cheer her on. She will be competing in breaststroke and backstroke. Catherine has been competing in Special Olympics for 17 years as well. Going to the USA Games to her means having her dream come true, making new friends, traveling to Florida, and competing.

The 2022 Special Olympics USA Games will be from June 5-12 and will unite more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the Caribbean. We all have reasons to shine, but for Special Olympics athletes, one of those reasons is the love of the sport. Special Olympics athletes display remarkable abilities not only on the field, but in all areas of life. By celebrating their dedication and perseverance, we become champions for a more inclusive world.

The Libertyville Stars Swim Club was formed in 2000 as The Cats Special Olympics Swim Team by Becky Peacock and Ann Davidsen to bring Special Olympics to Lake County. The name formally changed in 2007 to The Libertyville Stars in 2007. There are currently 34 athletes on the team ranging in age from 13 to 50, each with a diagnosis of an intellectual or developmental disability. The current head coach is Tina Lowry.
