Elgin's Gifford Park Association gives $5,000 donation for Firefighters Memorial Plaza

Gifford Park Association will present a $5,000 donation to Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 in support of Firefighters Memorial Plaza.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, there will be a check presentation to Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum, which will assist in the construction of the plaza, located in front of historic Fire Barn No. 5. Memorial plans call for an area expansion to include two flag poles, a seating area and water fountain. Elgin Fire Barn is honored to house this sanctuary for all our brave firefighters who served in the communities. The names of all area firefighters who served will be recognized for their incredible service.

The Gifford Park Association was formed in 1979 to preserve the historic integrity of the oldest neighborhood in Elgin and improve quality of life for its residents. This has been accomplished by the creation of the Elgin Historic District, named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The GPA also advocates for preservation through historic grant programs, monetary donations to restore historic landmarks throughout Elgin & by hosting home restoration events where GPA members have shared their time & expertise in historic preservation. The Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum is a Nationally Registered Historical Building and second official landmark in Elgin. Established in 1903, it was the fifth original fire barn in Elgin, housing horses & a firefighting carriage. Official operations shut down in 1991, but Fire Barn No. 5 now operates as a museum, containing historical firefighting artifacts. Its rich history and spirit keep the Barn feeling lively with visitors coming from near and far to learn about decades worth of stories and services from our brave firefighters.
