Mundelein District 120 School Board solicits applications for open seat

The Mundelein District 120 Board of Education is seeking candidates to fill the seat left by the resignation of Board President Laura Vogt.

The Board accepted Vogt's resignation Tuesday evening after thanking her for 5 years of service including more than four as president. Kevin Myers, Superintendent of Districts 75 and 120, thanked Vogt for her dedicated service and remembered the district's progress under her leadership.

"I want to make sure you understand the impact you've had on the District," Myers told Vogt after thanking her for her leadership.

He mentioned more than a dozen accomplishments during her time on the Board including the move to a shared services model with Elementary District 75, five successful negotiations with employee unions, development of an equity policy, and a decrease in the tax rate. Fellow Board members also praised Vogt for her service, commitment and dedication to the District 120 community.

"What makes a community great is who shows up," Board Member Lisa Yaffe said. "And who shows up is Laura - time and time again."

In her absence, Board Vice-President Peter Rastrelli will take over as Board President, leaving a vacancy at Vice-President.

The new board member will fill the remainder of Vogt's term which runs until April 2023. The Board has 60 days to fill the seat after accepting the resignation. It will interview candidates for the opening and looks to fill the seat at its June 7 meeting. The Board may also appoint a new Vice-President on June 7.

To qualify for the opening a candidate must be: a United States citizen; at least 18 years old; a resident of School District 120 for at least one year; and a registered voter.

Interested candidates should submit a resume, a letter of interest, and answer the following questions: Why do you want to be a Board member? What specific skills would you bring to the Board? What is your previous community involvement? What do you see as the role of a Board member?

The letter of interest and resume must be addressed to D120 Board of Education at ortiz@d120.org or delivered in-person at the D120 East District Office, 470 N. Lake St., Mundelein no later than Friday, May 20 at 4 p.m.

District Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
