Learn about container gardening with Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley April 20

"Grow Your Own Groceries - in Containers!," a free seminar that will help people save money on food, build health and experience the pleasures of gardening, will be offered on Wednesday, April 20, at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

It will be 7 to 8 p.m. in the library's Meadows Community Rooms, 270 N. Grove Ave.

During the seminar, Ron and Linda Stork from the Bolingbrook Garden Club will share their knowledge and years of experience growing their own food in more than 20 containers.

A sunny driveway, patio or porch allows anyone to grow their own food using containers; one doesn't need a big backyard or other outdoor space in order to successfully grow vegetables.

Container gardening provides alternatives to the vegetables available in grocery stores during the local season.

Using containers means no weeding, no kneeling in the dirt, no rototilling and no huge outlay of money. The gardener can keep plants free of herbicides, pesticides and other substances that are harmful to one's health. And the flavor of the products grown in containers is often better than similar products from grocery stores.

This program is being presented by The Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley, a nonprofit organization based in Batavia that is committed to building sustainable and just food systems, as well as restoring quality and equality to the food supply.
