SWALCO to offer gardening programs

Gardening and food bring people together. They foster a sense of enjoyment, peace, security, health and well-being.

More individuals and families are interested in learning how to start a garden, while others are interested in learning how to compost. Even those who are already gardening can learn to "up" their gardening game.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County is offering its second annual Garden Learning Series for 2022. The series features a number of workshops to help and educate on a variety of topics.

The first program will cover seed starting for a garden. A program dedicated to compost and composting will also be offered. Workshops will be held virtually from 6-7:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Topics include:

• Feb. 9: Seed Starting for Your Garden

• March 9: Successful Vegetable Gardening

• April 13: Vegetable Gardening ... Beyond Basics

• May 11: Composting: How to Make the Most of it

• June 8: The Garden is Planted: Now What?

This program series is offered in collaboration with the University of Illinois Extension and Master Gardeners via a two-year grant that SWALCO received from the USDA.

The grant focuses on efforts to promote composting and food waste diversion, and also hopes to increase the generation and use of compost in commercial, residential, agriculture, and community gardens sectors in Lake County.

Registration is free. Visit extension.illinois.edu/lm or swalco.org.
