Aurora launches free snow shovel program for senior citizens, residents with disabilities

After a successful pilot program last winter, the City of Aurora is continuing and enhancing this winter its popular snow removal initiative for senior citizens and residents with disabilities.

Operation Senior Shovel is a free program that pairs Aurora residents with disabilities and senior citizens with volunteers who will provide shoveling services.

Operation Senior Shovel is open to 150 Aurora residents who are at least 60 years of age or residents who have disabilities or serious medical conditions that prohibit them from shoveling snow. In addition, qualifying households cannot have other adults under the age of 60 years old and physically capable of removing snow.

Senior citizens, persons with disabilities, or designees can request assistance by applying online at www.aurora-il.org/SeniorShovel or by calling (630) 256-3015.

The online application and phone line will both be available beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13.

Approved applicants will be notified by Friday, Dec. 17.

Operation Senior Shovel is a volunteer-based community initiative. All volunteers are asked to commit to serving the duration of the winter season and will be assigned to specific houses for the season. All volunteers must provide their own snow removal equipment.

The city will provide salt at each approved home.
