Aurora church opens Advent season with candle lighting, carol singalong

On Sunday, Nov. 28, Aurora's Flowing Forth United Methodist Church joined UMC churches worldwide that lit the first candle of the Advent wreath.

The Rev. Derek Rogers lit a wreath candle after a scripture reading and prayer by congregant Judy Bieritz of Aurora. Continuing a church tradition, selected congregants help light wreath candles by reading a scripture selection and a prayer. The wreath celebrates the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, Saturday, Dec. 25.

Flowing Forth UMC worships online and in person at 5 p.m. Sundays at Pal Joey's Restaurant, 2030 Main St. in Batavia. The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.

Donations are accepted for a meal served with the open-table worship service. Worship includes communion with prepackaged elements, scripture, prayer, a pastoral message, a meal and small-group discussions at tables.

During Advent, the Rev. Rogers' sermon series is "He will be Called." Based on titles given Jesus by the prophet Isaiah, sermons are "Mighty God," Dec. 5; "Everlasting Father," Dec. 12; and "Prince of Peace," Dec. 19. In his sermons, the Rev. Rogers' explores what the names tell about who Jesus can be for all today.

Added for Advent is a "Songs of Christmas" study series featuring a sing-along of vintage Christmas hymns and reflections on their lyrics. The Rev. Rogers and church music leader John Douglas will lead the series at 10 a.m. Sundays Dec. 5, 12 and 19 at Aurora Christian School 2255 Sullivan Rd. in Aurora. The public is invited. Attendees are invited to sing and reflect on lyrics of "Joy to the World," "O Holy Night," "O Come all ye Faithful" and other famous carols.
