Two Elmhurst Unit District 205 students honored with Yes, I Can Awards

Two Elmhurst Unit District 205 students were honored with Yes, I Can Awards from the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children, which recognizes children and youth with exceptionalities who have demonstrated their determination and achievements in multiple ways.

The awards were presented at the recent CEC Convention, held virtually.

Paul Rosland, a student at the newly opened District 205 Bridges Transition Center, was nominated because of his leadership skills and advocacy for transition services. He was honored under the Transition category.

Franco Bibbiano, a freshman at York was honored under the School Achievement category and recognized for his industrial technology and woodworking skills.

"Every student has a story and the stories of our 'Yes, I Can award' winners demonstrate a commitment to persevere and to go above and beyond each day," said Dr. Kevin Rubenstein, assistant superintendent of student services. "We could not be prouder of these students and what they have contributed to our district and to this community."

The purpose of the award is to encourage individuals to seek their highest potential and to increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of those with exceptionalities.

The Illinois Council for Exceptional Children recognizes 12 students with exceptionalities in six categories: academics, arts, school and community activities, self-advocacy, technology and transition. Other Yes I Can Award winners include: Christian Martinez, Transition, Field Middle School in Northbrook; Alfonso Hernandez Jr., Academics, Field Middle School in Northbrook; and Omar Farroukh, Academics, Worth Junior High School in Worth, Ill.
