Empowering Women NFP held their Annual Global 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness

A special effort was completed Sunday, October 16th, 2021 with the 5K runs in the Chicago area, Hosted by Empowering Women NFP, they had aimed at bringing awareness and funds for their skills development workshops for survivors of domestic abuse.

Empowering Women NFP held their Annual Global 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness and funds for their skills development workshops for survivors of domestic abuse. It was a beautiful sunny day and supporters gathered at the Mallard Lake Nature Preserve in Hanover Park, IL to walk for a cause.

Virtual participants joined from the US (CA, CT, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, TX, WI), Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Nigeria, New Zealand, Pakistan and Ukraine. With signs in hand and the intention in their hearts to "End the Cycle of DOMESTIC Violence," the group completed the 5K with lots of energy.

October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October 1989. October is when the courage and resilience of survivors of abuse, neglect and violence is honored, the dedication of advocates and service providers is honored and the month that we recommit ourselves to standing with them for safety, dignity and justice.

Afterwards the winners of the 5K were announced - Caroline Skaret and Susan Dean. The Global/Virtual winners were Shalini Sharma (fastest virtual run time), Aliya Urooj Zaidi (fastest virtual walk time) and Preethi Prasad (fastest Global walk time). Empowering Women also thanked and awarded Syed Khalil Ullah and Salim Jamal for their commitment and dedication in supporting the cause. Thank you also to Akbar Mithani for donating free donuts and coffee for the 5K!

Empowering Women NFP is a Chicago based non-profit. Its mission is to "break the cycle of Domestic Violence by providing the necessary services in and around Chicago." The organization provides immediate short-term shelter, counseling, legal help, job skills training, placement and holistic workshops, basic health needs and life coaching skills. The team consists of 8 Board Members, Abhi Singh, Arshia Hasnain (Founder and Executive Director), Farvah Lakhani, Farah Chalisa, Mumtaz Husain, Sahar Ahmad, Sarah Hussain and Stephanie Pelzer. Empowering Women has two community liaisons, Diana Rodriguez (Latinx Community) and Sena Alinco (African American Community).

Remember, domestic violence can happen to anyone in any community regardless of age, gender, economic status, race, religion, nationality or even educational background. There are still a few more days to take part in bringing awareness to Domestic Violence. Empowering Women NFP is partnering with The Women's Justice League to be a voice for survivors by bringing awareness and advocacy to make a difference.
