Winner of five Tony Awards, the modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales brings together kids' favorite storybook characters for a whimsical, dark, and witty tale that asks: "What happens AFTER 'happily ever after?'"

The musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel -- all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

As the next-level troupe of Children's Theatre of Elgin, Fox Valley Theatre Company shows are traditionally made up of cast members ages 13 to 20. In efforts to include those actors who missed an opportunity to perform last year due to COVID-19, the age for "Into the Woods" has been extended to 22 years old.

"Our production of 'Into the Woods' will cause audiences to question the darker themes embedded throughout the second act, realize that no character is innately "good" or "bad," and reflect on how we see these types of characters in everyday life," Miserendino said. "Our extremely talented ensemble cast, which features interpretive dance choreographed by Heather Goldman, and puppets designed by Lolly Extract, will remind audiences that we need to stop attacking each other, as is evident in the song "Your Fault," be appreciative of each other's differences and desires, and come together to combat the giants that we all face as we embark through life's journey through the woods.

"Due to the more mature nature of the second act, we have stripped away the fairy-tale-ness in the set and costume designs, for this story is anything but a fairy tale with a happy-ever-after. Our production will be unlike any other production of 'Into the Woods' and will be a performance that you do not want to miss."
