Elmhurst's Citizen's Police Academy starts Sept. 1

Elmhurst's Citizen's Police Academy is a 12-week program designed to give citizens a working knowledge of law enforcement.

The program is offered free of charge and is limited to 25 students per session. One block of instruction is offered each week from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays for 12 weeks. The next session will run from Sept. 1 through Nov. 17. The program is free of charge but is limited to 25 students per session. Participants must be over the age of 21 and must live or work in the City of Elmhurst.

It provides an in-depth view of how a particular division of the department functions. The program is both informative and fun, allowing students an actual hands-on experience in some classes.

The Citizen's Police Academy provides an opportunity for residents who live or work in the City of Elmhurst to become acquainted with how the police department operates on a day-to-day basis.

At the end of the program, participants will have a better understanding of police procedures, equipment, responsibilities, demands, and the laws governing the actions of police officers.

They will learn about the laws of arrest, defensive tactics, crime scene analysis, interviewing and interrogation, investigations, internet investigations, firearms, traffic stops, Emergency Response Team, Mission Team, DARE, and the K-9 program.
