Community Speaker Series to focus on diversity, inclusion

A community speaker series focusing on anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion will be launched this summer.

The first event will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 17, through a partnership between the League of Women Voters-Arlington Heights-Mount Prospect-Buffalo Grove Areas and High School District 214.

"The purpose is to expand the conversations about anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion in our schools and communities and provide educational opportunities for all of our residents," said District 214 Superintendent Dr. David R. Schuler and League President Heidi Graham.

The initial event is virtual and will focus on bystander intervention training in response to a sharp and sustained rise in anti-Asian harassment.

This session - led by Advancing Justice Chicago, in partnership with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Chicago and Hollaback! - will help people identify hate incidents as they occur and learn to take action safely and effectively.

Participants may register at bit.ly/LWVAHBystander. Registrants will receive a Zoom link via email. American Sign Language interpreters will be signing the presentation.

Details about subsequent events in the series, to be scheduled during the next several months, will be made available as plans are finalized.

League of Women Voters is nonpartisan and neither supports nor opposes candidates for office.
