Medal of Honor recipient to speak at Carol Stream Memorial Day service May 31

Join the Carol Stream Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10396 and the Carol Stream Park District, along with the Village of Carol Stream, for a Memorial Day Service.

The service will start at 11 a.m. Monday, May 31, at Veterans Memorial Plaza, at the Ross Ferraro Town Center, at Gary Avenue and Lies Road.

The speaker will be Allen J. Lynch, a Vietnam War veteran who was awarded the Medal of Honor. During heavy fighting on Dec. 15, 1967, he single-handedly defended three wounded men from enemy attack until locating a friendly force that could evacuate them. Lynch was subsequently promoted to sergeant and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

Taps will be performed by Bill Mertz and Tom McNeil will play "Amazing Grace" on bag pipes.

This service may be attended in person or can be viewed on Facebook Live via the Carol Stream Park District or Veterans Memorial Plaza pages starting at 11 a.m.

They recommend safe practices such as social distancing and wearing face covering, which are now optional for outdoor activities.

Seating is only available for those participating in the service. There will be no audience seating provided so bring your own chair.
