Auditions set for Elgin Summer Theatre's 'Nunsense' show

The Hemmens Cultural Center and Up and Coming Theatre Company are happy to announce that Elgin Summer Theatre will present an outdoor version of the hit comedy, "Nunsense," this summer. Performances will take place July 9-11 and 16-18 at the Wing Park Band Shell in Elgin.

The EST production of "In the Heights" has been rescheduled to summer 2022.

"Nunsense" is an audience interactive show that EST is excited to bring to an outdoor setting. The fresh air and ample space of Wing Park will be home to the "Little Sisters of Hoboken" this summer. Join the Sisters as they put on a variety show! Come meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a street-wise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

Auditions are open to the public. The first round of auditions for "Nunsense" will be held virtually. Those auditioning should be age 16 or older, and prepare 32 bars of a vocal selection that best shows off their personality and vocal range.

All persons auditioning are required to fill out an information form and submit their video recording in the form that can be found on the Up and Coming website, www.uactheatre.org. The deadline for initial vocal audition submissions is Thursday, May 20.

An in-person callback will be held by invitation only at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin on Tuesday, May 25. Rehearsals will be conducted via Zoom and in-person.

Safety is the number one priority this summer. To help plan the rehearsal process and staging of "Nunsense," vaccination status may be taken into consideration while casting and all rehearsals and performances will be conducted with CDC guidelines in place.

The Hemmens Cultural Center and the board of directors of Up and Coming are incredibly grateful to be able to provide, through Elgin Summer Theatre, an in-person theater experience that will allow for social distancing in an outdoor venue. They hope you'll join the "Sisters" this summer for all the fun.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. July 9-10, 16-17 with 3 p.m. matinees on July 11 and 18.
