Barrington Chamber awards scholarships to area students

The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce awarded nearly $4,000 in scholarships to four local high school students during its Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship Awards Luncheon, which was held Thursday, April 22, hosted by the BACC Women's Biz Net (WBN) at Biltmore Country Club in North Barrington.

"The BACC Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship is an investment in our local youth," said BACC President and CEO Suzanne Corr.

"The scholarships are available to students who will be attending universities, community colleges, vocational or trade school programs as an investment in their future careers."

The scholarship is named after Lauren Brown, a young woman who worked for the chamber for several years and lost her battle with cancer at the age of 29.

The four scholarship recipients shared their stories and future plans during the awards ceremony. This year's recipients are: Matthew Lee (plans to study economics at Northwestern University); Vincent Petropoulos (plans to study business and finance at the University of Illinois); Quinn Rowley (plans to study business at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse); and Katherine Shein (plans to study pre-occupational therapy at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska).

"Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarships are funded by chamber members through many chamber events, such as our BACC Golf Classic, our Conquer Awards and Silent Auction, which was held virtually in January, and our WBN activities," Corr said.

The BACC Golf Classic will be held Monday, Aug. 2, at The Club at Wynstone in North Barrington.

Through the years, BACC has awarded nearly $80,000 in scholarships to local high school students. Barrington High School seniors, as well as any student who works for a BACC business, or any student whose parent works for a BACC business, are eligible to apply for the Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship.
