Groundbreaking ceremony for Elgin community garden on Earth Day

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Salient Community Garden will take place on Earth Day from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at 1141 Bode Road, behind Adventist Church in Elgin.

Everyone can sign up for a garden bed on that day.

The one-acre fruit, vegetable, and flower garden is intended to foster community by having family, friends, and neighbors working alongside each other to plant and harvest together. The Salient Garden is for all generations.

The benefits of having a community garden include food production, improved nutrition, exercise, improving the environment, mental health, and expanding education and training in horticulture. A garden can be a place to meditate or enjoy quiet moments. One study indicates that gardens reduce crime and provide a safe place for youth to explore nature and community.

Dr. Terri Dallas-Prunskis and Dr. Silvia Able-Cain coordinate the Salient Community Garden. They will help all gardeners at every step of the way to have an enjoyable experience and a plentiful harvest.

The opening ceremony for the Salient Lifestyle Center also will held at the same time and place.

Salient Center is the first lifestyle center of its kind in Illinois. It will provide educational programs in healthy lifestyle based on the eight principles of CREATION Life, developed by Florida Hospital in Orlando, and the lifestyle pillars of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Salient Center will partner with other local or national organizations with similar goals.
