Gail Borden offers programs on a healthier lifestyle

From meditation to memory challenges, Gail Borden Public Library is offering a variety of adult programs this spring to support good mental and physical health. Register for any or all of these events at gailborden.info/register.

Deeper into Meditation:

Now more than ever, dealing with stress is an ongoing challenge. Presenter Umesh Bhatia will share natural and effective meditation techniques to help relieve stress and achieve a lasting sense of peace at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30. Not Quiet and Not Submissive:

Gail Borden and ECC MAGIC are hosting "Not Quiet and Not Submissive: Asian-American Women Speak Out" from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, via Zoom. Local Asian American women speak on the recent tragic event in Atlanta and how they are dealing with racism and misogyny in America. Speakers include: Thonglouane Keorajavongsay, Lao community leader; Ling Low, Elgin resident; Chad Ouankeo-Ratsamy; Rep. Janet Yang Rohr D-41, Illinois General Assembly; and Pat Vilaychack. Plant-based nutrition:

In the three-part series, "Spring Ahead with a Plant-Based Nutrition Plan," learn how to maximize nutrition with practical tips for healthier eating and discover the importance of a plant-based diet in controlling symptoms of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions and arthritis.

Health educators Joan Davis and Karen Bender will share how you can get all the nutrients you need from a plant-based diet that taste good and provide tips for making the transition to a whole food plant-based lifestyle. This program will free you from counting calories, weighing foods, and measuring for portion control.

The series will be presented at 7 p.m. on three consecutive Wednesdays, April 7, April 14 and April 21. Register for each session to receive Zoom links.

The first program will explore why whole food plant-based makes sense for health and weight loss. It will be followed by learning how to get enough to eat and get the right nutrients from foods that taste good. The final program will offer transition tips for a whole food plant-based lifestyle.

Memory Café:

Individuals experiencing memory changes and their care partners are invited to share the warm, inviting atmosphere of our virtual coffeehouse style Memory Café at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Tuesday, April 27. Celebrate National Poetry Month by talking about beautiful poetry images. Registration is required. You will receive the Zoom link one hour prior to the meeting.

Abuse and Violence Prevention:

Join Ruth Peterson of the Elgin Community Crisis Center to learn how abuse and violence in childhood affect adult health and well-being, and how to work on healthy emotional and verbal relationships. This program is offered in both English and Spanish and will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20. Register to receive Zoom link.
