Lombard McDonald's brings 'Happy Meals' to Lexington Square Lombard residents

A fixture in American culture evokes happy memories (and Happy Meals), serving up fare that hits the spot - for both appetite and nostalgia. The tagline "McDonald's is your kind of place, puts a smile on your face" was vividly demonstrated on Thursday. Residents in memory care and assisted living at Lexington Square Senior Living in Lombard were treated to a trip down McDonald's memory lane as they enjoyed meals provided by JJC Restaurant Group's McDonald's in Lombard.

Julie Bista, Director of Memory Care, said that the idea of a McDonald's celebration was recently "sparked" by one of the residents who hadn't been eating very much. "She wasn't very hungry. We knew that she loved McDonald's, so I asked one of our staff members to run and get her a cheeseburger to entice her to eat. We handed it to her; she was so excited and said that it brought back memories. All of our residents have fond memories of McDonald's, so we decided to have a red and yellow party."

Bista reached out to McDonald's, and, loving the story, they generously offered to donate the 100 cheeseburgers, fries, and vintage toys, all in red Happy Meal boxes. Giovanna Garzon, Lexington Square's resident service coordinator, and the nursing team helped put together the fantastic event.

The residents gleefully visited the activities room, decorated for the occasion. In order to maintain social distancing, they returned to their apartments after having their individual pictures taken. Their meals were delivered to them there. "They were so excited; it was amazing seeing their faces. We found out one of our residents had worked for McDonald's for 15 years. She was so happy. This brought back wonderful memories for her," Bista said.

"I'm always very proud of our team. They really get to know the residents and always go the extra mile to take special care of them. The residents were delighted!" said Dan Harrington, vice president of Senior Living for Lexington Health Network,

"We're grateful to McDonald's for their generosity," Bista said. "It really made our residents' day!"
