Submitted by Des Plaines Park District

The Des Plaines Park District is delighted to unveil the Prairie Lakes Aquatic Center at 515 E. Thacker. This 27,000-square-foot construction project is connected to the existing Prairie Lakes Community Center. Construction conception and designs began in May 2015, officially breaking ground in April 2019.

The new facility features an eight-lane, 25-yard lap pool, with a timing/scoreboard system and 150 spectator retractable bleachers. This is the new home of the park district's Warriors championship swim team for year-round training and competitions.

The 3½- to 4-foot depth warm water wellness pool with three lap lanes and in-pool seating complete with hydrotherapy jets, is perfect for Aqua Fitness & Wellness and for parent infant swim programming.

The water play splash pad is a fun water adventure for children, ages 2-12. Complete with Life Floor rubberized cushion base. The lap pool or splash pad are available during open swim or can be reserved for private parties. The new Multipurpose/Party Room is connected to the aquatic center and this space includes a kitchen, seating up to 50, 65-inch TV and outdoor patio seating.

The aquatic center includes its own men and women's locker rooms. The center also offers six convenient family-friendly changing rooms.

The new entrance on the southwest side of Prairie Lakes Park is accessible from both Algonquin Road and Thacker Street. Updates to the outdoor property include new basketball court, new sand volleyball, and updates to the walking pathway. More updates to the Prairie Lakes Fitness Center are coming soon as the Des Plaines Park District plans for an all-inclusive wellness experience.

There will be a public grand opening ribbon cutting held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. Reserved open swim will be available at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Group sizes are determined by Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines, and each session will be one and a half hours in length. For reservations, call (847) 390-4949 or visit the aquatic center front desk.

All attendees will receive a door prize and be entered to win free memberships, swim school lessons, aqua fitness & wellness classes and more. Sign up for a membership that weekend and receive a discount and free merchandise.

The Des Plaines Park District is proud to provide the community with this state of the art aquatic facility providing more recreational opportunities for its residents.
