Fox River Trail closed in South Elgin through Sept. 4

A section of the Fox River Trail in South Elgin will be closed through Sept. 4, due to trail construction in the area.

Work on this section of trail has been in the works for a while. The section north of State Street, within the Village of South Elgin, has been in transition for many years.

The village extended Center Street north, intersecting the existing trail. It was determined that because of the steep nature of the trail at the road crossing, it would be safer to create a switchback trail, to level-off the approach to the road for cyclists and pedestrians.

The village of South Elgin continues to pursue completion of the part of the project south of the Kane County Forest Preserve District's property and along the river.

The forest preserve district moved forward with a revised redesign, which included a switchback trail, a 90 degree, at-grade crossing of Center Street, and a connection to the village's portion of the project, at the existing trail along the riverfront.

The district's portion is expected to be completed Friday, Sept. 4, pending weather.

igns have been placed on the trail to notify the public of the trail closure. The Forest Preserve District asks trail users to exercise caution, be mindful of the closure during this time, and to plan alternate routes.
