Columnist shares her experience with being in isolation

I received an email from one of my coaching clients explaining her meltdown and concerns with the recent crisis. And then she asked this interesting and personal question, "I'm curious ... how are you handling this?"

After reading those words, I felt God nudging me to share some of my personal back story with my readers who may not know it. Those who do may find it a bit more applicable to their own lives at this time.

During this crisis, I have noticed there is much expert advice on survival skills for being shut-in. I kind of consider myself an expert as well. Not only because of my nursing education and experience, or because I'm a life coach - but my real expertise comes from my personal experience as a shut-in.

You see, the last 12 years I've done some motivational speaking on my Dream BIG topic and book, sharing how from years 2000 to 2008 I was totally housebound with an illness that still challenges my daily living.

As I write this column, I fight back the tears because it makes me fully realize how far I've come with the help of God, and now I'm better equipped to help others.

So to address the question, I'd say, I'm handling life the same way I've lived the past 20 years. For me, the initial shock of this crisis hasn't been quite so horrifying as it might be for others, because I've already experienced what's it's like being shut-in and unable to work.

My concern is being placed in the higher risk category due to my age, health and blood type. To alleviate my fears, I remind myself I've lived with health concerns every day for the past 20 years. So, as usual, I'm proceeding with caution, washing my hands often throughout the day, placing limits on visitors and managing my emotions, thoughts and fears.

To further sooth my fears and strengthen my faith, I think back on the tough times God has seen me through. I read and meditate on Bible promises from the Psalms. There are beautiful ones on God's provision and protection. I find comfort in knowing, as a whole nation, we are in this together. We find strength in numbers.

In my shut-in situation, I dealt with an unforeseen and unknown time limit. I wondered if I'd ever get out, and no one understood what I was going through.

Today, I do what I did back then - I address my fears directly with God. When I was first shut-in, I handled my shock by explaining to God I didn't know how to live in isolation. To my amazement, he gave me a greater understanding about the simple abundance of the spiritual life through ideas, intuition, Bible reading and other books and articles that crossed my path.

When I listen to the experts' suggestions regarding this crisis, I'm amazed God taught me what they are recommending and more.

Throughout the day, I pray for the health and financial concerns of my readers, coaching clients, family, medical professionals, spiritual and national leadership. I pray this crisis passes quickly, our needs are met and God helps spare lives.

I spend some time being creative. I discovered my writing gift while shut-in. We all have a creative side. Yours may not be writing. Some of my friends like sewing, painting, cooking or decorating, or a combination of things. Just follow your interests. And don't be insecure to be yourself.

I utilize my TV to add some spice to my life. In the morning, I set the spiritual tone for the day by watching a program with a Bible teaching.

Each evening, I relax by watching something funny, romantic or educational. Sometimes I view a documentary about another country and observe what it's like being there.

Watching stories affects our emotions and can inspire and encourage us. I also find if I feel lonely, viewing people on the screen helps me feel others are present.

On those days I don't feel as well, I don't force myself to do much. I do what I can, when I can. I know rest and relaxation are important to improve health. I drink plenty of water; staying hydrated is significant in preventing or fighting off disease.

I'm a people person, so staying connected to people is something I enjoy. I'm grateful to live in a time of phones and computers, and utilize them daily. I have a phone conversation with a friend when I can to lift my spirit.

If need be, I do some life coaching by phone to meet the needs of others. I also go through my call list and email, text and call my loved ones to make sure their needs are met.

I stay up-to-date by reading the daily news and check updates so I don't miss anything important. But I set limits so I don't feel overwhelmed.

There's so much more to the shut-in life than I can cover here. Most important is we need to remain connected to God. He is more creative and powerful than any invisible COVID-19 demon we fight. I believe he chose us to rise above this and, when we do, let's be more aware and compassionate to others who are shut-in.
