Gail Borden to host film screenings this spring

Gail Borden Public Library invites movie fans to screenings of Earth Day-inspired films, documentaries, classics, popular films and more. For information on upcoming programs or exhibits, call (847) 742-2411 or visit www.gailborden.info.

• The Elgin Green Expo will feature a screening of "Revenge of the Electric Car" from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, in the Elgin Room of the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

There also will be a family program in the Community Rooms, and Expo electric cars and fair at The Centre of Elgin across the street.

• As part of Earth Day's 50th anniversary, the Elgin Earth Month Film Festival will feature four Earth Day-inspired films each Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in April. On April 6, the film will be "Living in the Future's Past," followed on April 13 by "Normal is Over," on April 20 by "Living the Change," and on April 27 with "Sustainable."

• The next "Reel Films for Real Women" will feature the 2019 film "Judy," starring Renée Zellweger, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the Meadows Community Rooms in the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. Thirty years after starring in "The Wizard of Oz," beloved actress and singer Judy Garland arrives in London to perform sold-out shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. While there, she reminisces with friends and fans and begins a whirlwind romance with musician Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. On April 28, the film will be the 2008 movie "Taking Root The Vision of Environmentalist Wangari Maathai." "Taking Root" tells the story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Professor Maathai discovered her life's work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. They told her they were walking long distances for firewood, clean water was scarce, the soil was disappearing from their fields, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. These screenings are hosted by the Elgin Area Branch of American Association of University Women.

• "No Shushing Movie Fridays" offers a film screening in a family-friendly, casual setting. This program welcomes people of all abilities. Please contact the library one week in advance if you need accommodations. No registration is required. It is offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Hoffer Room at the South Elgin branch, 127 S. McLean Blvd. Chatting and snacks from home are welcome.

On March 20, it will be the 2019 "Angry Birds 2." It will be followed by the 2019 "Frozen 2" on March 27.

• The Brown Bag Lunch Classic Films series will continue with the 1968 film "Bullitt," directed by Peter Yates and starring Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Bisset, and Robert Vaughn, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 13, in the Meadows Community Rooms of the main library. An all guts, no glory San Francisco cop becomes determined to find the underworld kingpin that killed the witness in his protection. No registration required. No registration required. • On Monday, March 26, the "Interactive Movie" series continues with "Toy Story 4" from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Meadows Community Room at the main library. They are bringing to life this fun road trip adventure with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang! Prop bags provided. Costumes encouraged.
