Tax break created for surviving spouses of first responders

Editor's note: This report has been changed to say this benefit is available to the surviving spouses of all U.S. military personnel who have died.

The Cook County Board of Review has announced a new Surviving Spouse Tax Abatement program authorizing property tax abatement for the surviving spouses of police officers, firefighter/paramedics or U.S. military personnel.

The program can abate up to 100% of a surviving spouse's county property tax liability. Once approved to the program, the surviving spouse abatement will renew on a yearly basis.

Details regarding who is eligible can be found on the Cook County Board of Review website, cookcountyboardofreview.com/about/surviving-spouse-abatement.

Schaumburg Township Assessor John R. Lawson, a 35-year active police force veteran, supports this new initiative. Questions can be directed to the Schaumburg Township assessor's office at (847) 884-0030 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
