Gurnee artist exhibits works based on concept of 'chi'

Blue Moon Gallery is hosting an eye-popping new exhibition by Gurnee artist John Callahan that explores the Chinese concept of "chi."

Thirteen works by visual artist John Callahan will be displayed through Feb. 9 at Blue Moon Gallery, 18620 Belvidere Road, Grayslake. The gallery launched in April 2019 and is open from 1-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Now in his late 80s, Callahan started painting just over 10 years ago at the age of 75 after a trip to Asia, where he became fascinated with the concept of the life energy referred to as "chi" in China. Its root idea relates very closely to that of breath and breathing, and this idea resonated powerfully with him.

The next thing he knew he was holding a brush in front of a canvas. The result has been a series of bold, dynamic, colorful paintings that capture the visions and thoughts related to "chi" from the images Callahan sees in his dreams.

"Coming from deep within my soul, and often emerging in dreams or when I'm simply listening to my heart, my paintings underscore my belief in the Chinese concept of the 'chi' life force permeating all of existence. I paint in something of a mixed style. Some say it draws inspiration from famed painter Joan Miro mixed with Asian calligraphic themes. One thing is clear: My paintings will always provide new meanings and insights whenever you revisit them."
