Learn about renewable energy barriers in Naperville at Jan. 29 program

A program on "Renewable Energy Barriers in Naperville - And What We Can Do!" will be offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the Wentz Science Center, Room 104 at North Central College, 131 S. Loomis St., Naperville.

Many people are not aware that Naperville electric customers face significant barriers to using clean energy and fully participating in today's "green economy." These barriers are rooted in Naperville's municipal electric utility and its relationship with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency. IMEA is nonprofit unit of local government created in 1984 that is currently comprised of 32 municipal electric systems from all across Illinois. Each of those communities owns and operates its own electric distribution system. Some operate local power generation plants.

Learn more about Naperville - IMEA, including the heavy reliance on coal-fired sources of electricity. And most importantly, learn what informed citizens can do to raise the political will to remove these barriers to benefit the local community and beyond.

Speaker Greg Hubert is a green energy advocate who has extensively studied the IMEA. In addition to reading the entire contract he has also attended many agency meetings.

This program is part of an Environmental Awareness series is sponsored by a Coalition of ACE, Greater Naperville Area Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby and League of Women Voters Naperville.
