Twin Groves to host annual Durlacher wrestling tournament

On Saturday, Jan. 18, Twin Groves Middle School will host the seventh annual Lindsey Durlacher Wrestling Tournament at Twin Groves, 2600 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove.

Varsity wrestlers from 13 middle schools are participating in the double-elimination tournament, including Aptakisic, Plum Grove, Wilmette, Caruso, Maple, Northwood, Daniel Wright, Millburn, Cooper, Magee, Lake Zurich North, and Liberty, as well as Twin Groves.

Wrestlers will weigh in from 7-8 a.m. and matches begin at 9 a.m.

The tournament honors Illinois wrestling standout District 21 Cooper Middle School alumnus Lindsey Durlacher, who passed away following an accident in June, 2011. A state champion in eighth grade, Durlacher earned two more state championships at Buffalo Grove High School and was All American and a national runner-up in his senior year at the University of Illinois.

He went on to wrestle internationally and earned a bronze medal as a USA World Greco Team member in 2006.

Admission to the event is $3 for adults; $2 for children ages 5 and older. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Lindsey Durlacher Scholarship Fund to help support local athletes who want to wrestle at the college level. As a collegiate and post-collegiate wrestler, Durlacher qualified for an unprecedented four Senior USA Maccabi Games and earned gold medals in Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling at each.
