'Chuck Jones: Season of Creativity' exhibit opens at Gail Borden

This month, Gail Borden Public Library will open its new exhibit "Chuck Jones: Season of Creativity," welcome best-selling author Mary Doria Russell, host a "Snoopy Cardboard House Building Challenge," and continue its Sunday concert series with Moeller Cello & Guitar Duo.

'Chuck Jones - Season of Creativity' opens Jan. 15:

Try your hand at art and science hands-on activities with Warner Bros. Looney Tunes characters this winter at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. Learn about animation, visit Marvin the Martian's space ship and Duck Dodgers Multi-Plane Photo Op at the "Chuck Jones: Season of Creativity" exhibit. Discover the animation of artist Chuck Jones, creator of Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote and Marvin Martian along with more than 300 animated films during the "Golden Age of Animation." Visit Chuck Jones' animation desk and museum archive artwork from classic Looney Tunes films. Celebrate the opening of this creative exhibit from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. Get your photo taken with Looney Tunes character Bugs Bunny, get creative at animation activities, enjoy cookies, and listen to the Elgin Master Chorale Chamber Singers perform their "Tunes From the Toons" program. Author to speak Jan. 12:

Mary Doria Russell, author of six best-selling novels, will discuss the writing process and her new historical novel, "The Women of the Copper Country," from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The program is co-sponsored by Elgin Area Arts Commission and Elgin Area Branch of the American Association of University Women.

Coffee with the Mayor:

The South Elgin Branch will host a "Coffee with the Mayor" from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in the Hoffer Room, 127 S. McLean Blvd. Hear about what's new and have your questions answered by South Elgin Village President Steve Ward.

Brown Bag Lunch Classic Films:

The 1981 film "On Golden Pond" starring Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda, will be shown at the "Brown Bag Lunch Classic Films" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in the Meadows Community Rooms of the main library. Elgin Alive:

The "Elgin Alive" monthly series continues with "What, No Beer?" by local historian Jerry Turnquist from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Meadows Community Rooms of Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Prohibition began in 1920, but it wasn't the first time Elgin was "dry." Historian Jerry Turnquist reveals earlier efforts to limit liquor sales in the city through the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. The program is hosted by Elgin Community Network, Elgin History Museum, and Gail Borden.

Armchair Generals:

The "Armchair Generals" will present "The Carolinas Campaign, Part 2" from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Grove Room of the main library. This Brown Bag Civil War and Lincoln Interest Group commemorate events, share insights, and talk about books or experiences. This program was rescheduled from October.

Armchair General Bill Lax concludes a two-part series on Sherman's march through the Carolinas in 1865. Part 2 picks up where Part 1 ends. In Part 2, Bill details the convoluted and controversial surrender negotiations between Sherman and Johnson and the acrimonious aftermath that nearly ends the Union General's military career. Chinese New Year:

Fill 2020 with good fortune at this special event "Chinese New Year: Celebration of the Rat!" at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the South Elgin Branch of the Gail Borden Public Library, 127 S. McLean Blvd. Enjoy fun crafts, stories and more to help ring in the new year.

Preschool fair:

The Preschool & Childcare Information Fair returns form 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 18, in the Meadows Community Room of the main library. Representatives from area preschools, day care centers and licensed homes will be available to talk about their child-care services and answer questions. The more schools you visit, the more chances you have to win prizes!

Concert series:

The Moeller Cello & Guitar Duo will perform works by master composers along with jazz and pop tunes during the "Sunday Afternoon Concerts Series" at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. Meet the performers and enjoy refreshments after the concert. Free tickets are available at any Gail Borden library location.

Snoopy Cardboard House Building Challenge:

Families will work together to build a house for Snoopy during the "Snoopy Cardboard House Building Challenge" on Monday, Jan. 20, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. There will be two sessions offered: 11 a.m. to noon and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Materials will be provided.

Passport services:

The Gail Borden Public Main Library now offers passport photo services. For $12, you will receive two photos, one of which is mailed with your application.

Applications are accepted every day up to an hour before the library closes. They take applications first come, first served, and implement a wait-list when there are a large number of people requesting passports. Note, each application may take 20 minutes or more to process.

The Main Library is an official Passport Acceptance Facility, accepting DS-11 applications at the Information Desk. Make sure you allow enough time for the U.S. Department of State to process your passport application before you are scheduled to travel.
