Navy Veteran Brings 'Pizza Like Never Before' to Lindenhurst

In the late 70s and early 80s, Gwendolyn Duplessis was an innovator, serving as one of the first women on a U.S. Naval ship. Today, the Navy veteran has brought the latest in pizza innovation to Lindenhurst.

Duplessis recently opened Firenza Pizza, a fresh-fired pizza concept touting "Pizza Like Never Before," in the Waterford Plaza at 616 N. Bridgeport Terrace. The new delivery and carryout only restaurant specializes in hand-crafted, made-to-order pizza with nearly 40 topping options.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                       
 

Originally from Virginia but living in Lindenhurst for the past 15 years, Duplessis spent five years as an interior communications tech for the U.S. Navy. She was one of the first women to serve on a combat ready vessel, before completing her service as a Second Class Petty Officer in 1981. Since, she has spent some time working in Ministry. Her husband and business partner, Ernest, is also a Navy veteran, who served multiple tours overseas before retiring as a Naval Commander in 2004. He currently works as an Associate Clinical professor at Northwestern University in Evanston.

"I am so thrilled to bring Firenza to Lindenhurst," says Gwendolyn, who is also a recent breast cancer survivor. "It has been a dream of mine to open my own business. Firenza brought that dream to life. After experiencing Firenza's fresh ingredients and incredible pizza first hand, I knew I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to open a Firenza of my own."

At Firenza, customers can expect handcrafted, made-to-order pizzas that can be customized with nearly 40 fresh toppings, including house-roasted garlic, mozzarella ovalini and meats such as pepperoni, sliced Italian sausage, smoked ham and meatballs.

Firenza also offers 10 chef-inspired signature pies. The Primavera Fresca is loaded with vegetables, while the Big Kahuna is topped with smoked ham, bacon and pineapple. There's also the award-winning Chipotle Chicken, topped with crema and fresh pico de gallo.

Pizzas are baked in an open-flame, stone-hearth oven and ready within five minutes.

Signature 10-inch pizzas start at $8.99, while 14-inch pizzas are also available starting at $12.99.

While convenience and price are important selling points, the priority for Firenza is phenomenal pizza. "Unlike most other fast casual pizza chains where the crusts are premade and machine-pressed, our pizza dough is made in house and hand-stretched to order," adds Gwendolyn.

The restaurant also offers customizable salads, oven-baked wings, home-style meatballs, breadsticks, and more.

Restaurant hours are Monday-Thursday, 11 am-8 pm; Friday-Saturday, 11 am-10 pm. They are closed on Sunday.
