Elgin church to explore stories of zombies and vampires Oct. 20

After a four-month absence, worshippers at First Congregational Church of Elgin will return to their 19th-century sanctuary for worship this Sunday at 10:15 a.m.

The sanctuary has been under extensive renovation, with the first phase of reconstruction (tuckpointing, a new roof, replastering and painting the interior, new carpet and more) finally completed.

The second phase of adding solar panels to the roof of the church will begin in January with a planned switch to all solar energy occurring in March 2020.

The service will feature choirs, hymns and the playing of the historic 1893 Farand and Votey organ.

The sermon by the Rev. Michael H. Montgomery will examine the spiritual issues reflected in the cultural resurgence of zombies and vampire fantasies.

What do such stories tell us about these times, and what does the Christian faith have to say in response?

In the afternoon, members of the church will join in the 50th annual CROP Walk in Elgin at 2 p.m. at City Hall Plaza.

The congregation has long championed the work of groups combating hunger, balancing direct aid to people who are hungry with economic development to prevent starvation. To sign up, visit www.crophungerwalk.org/elginil/.

Worship services are at 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. The church is located at 256 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.
