Elgin Vineyard offers seminar on responding with grace

In today's divisive society, it's not always easy to communicate love and respect. People take offense easily. Poorly chosen words may sound judgmental. Words meant to offer comfort sometimes add to the pain.

At Vineyard Church of Elgin, a team of professional counselors has developed a seminar to give insight on how to choose language that nurtures relationships. "Seasoned with Salt: Building Relationships by Responding with Grace" will be offered Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The seminar will be led by Halie Howells, a licensed marriage and family therapist, along with professional counselors Eve Ahrens, Courtney Neal, Zach Neal and Sara Piercey. The cost is $5 at the door or by registering in advance at elginvineyard.com. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to get better at forming deeper, healthier relationships," said the Rev. Tom Severson. "The title comes from a verse in Colossians: 'Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.'

"Learning to communicate in ways that heal rather than hurt is a skill we all need to cultivate in order to be people of grace," he said.

At the Sept. 22 service at Elgin Vineyard, 220 Division St., Severson concludes a four-part series titled "Live Like Jesus."

The service begins at 10 a.m., with a free coffee bar at 9:30 a.m. and again after the service.
