Sign up for pie bake-off at Taste of Batavia Sept. 1

Celebrate Labor Day weekend with Batavia MainStreet's "Taste of Batavia," a sampler party complete with live music, pie bake-off, activities and dancing. The Block Party will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, on the North River Street and the Batavia Riverwalk.

Tastings and drinks will be provided by downtown restaurants.

Bring the family to the kids activities and play area. River City Church will host a free bounce house, face painting, balloons, and snow cones from 4 p.m. to dusk.

Batavia Academy of Dance will be performing at 5:30 p.m., as well as hosting games and hula hooping, at the Peg Bond Center.

Walk across the pedestrian bridge, or take a stroll across North Wilson Street and view the Classic Car Show that will line the street connecting North River Street to the Riverwalk.

There will be live music by River City Revival at 4 p.m., Heavy Lifting at 4:30 p.m., and The Breakfast Club at 6 p.m.

Show off your baking skills at the Pie Bake-Off hosted by the Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation. Contestants must sign up online by Saturday, Aug. 31, at downtownbatavia.com/currentevents/block-party/.

All proceeds to the pie bake-off go to support the mission of the Batavia Mothers' Club. The $5 per entry fee can be submitted at pie drop-off.

All pies must be completely prepared by the entrant, no professional bakers, please. Pie entries must be: homemade, including crust, dessert only; and include at least bottom and side crusts. Categories are: fruit; nut; 16 and under (kids); and other. Pies will be sold by the slice at the Block Party after the judging.

All pies must be dropped off at the Batavia Mothers' Club tent between 3:30 and 4:15 p.m. Pies requiring refrigeration must be brought in a cooler. Pie judging will begin at 4:45 p.m. Contestants are not required to be present for the judging. Winners will be announced on the main stage by 6:30 p.m. The winners must submit a recipe upon request.

Pies will be judged on the following: appearance (pre-slice), flavor, and general appeal. There will be winners in each category, and one overall winner. Winners in each category will receive a blue ribbon. The overall winner will receive a blue ribbon and a $25 gift card.
