Read to Learn program tutor training set for August 23-24

Would you like to work one on one with someone and have a positive and transformative impact on their life?

The Read to Learn (RTL) Program allows you to work one on one with an adult student on basic reading and writing skills that will improve the quality of their lives.

Read to Learn is also a great opportunity for volunteers and adult students to make new friends in a program that meets once a week for 10 weeks.

The fall tutor training for new and returning tutors will be Friday and Saturday Aug. 23 and 24 at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, in Arlington Heights. Returning tutors are encouraged to bring a friend to the new tutor training.

A presentation on "Incorporating Writing into Read to Learn Lesson Plans" will be presented by Marlene Delaney, a longtime dedicated tutor. Delaney facilitates one of Read to Learn's book clubs at Wheeling High School. In 2018, she received the Spotlight on Service Award from the Illinois Secretary of State.

Read to Learn volunteers often see the people they work with get new jobs, be able to communicate better with their children's teachers, write letters, make new friends and much more. Both tutors and students learn about different cultures through the program as well.

"Volunteering in the Read to Learn program provides an opportunity for tutors to share their skills and wisdom with adult learners, while giving back to their community," said Laurie Hoffman, Read to Learn volunteer coordinator. "It is truly a rewarding experience."
