Meet Clark the Cubs mascot July 3 at Gail Borden

Calling all Cubs fans!

Families can meet Clark, the official mascot of the Chicago Cubs, and get their photos taken with him. Bring a baseball for Clark to autograph, too!

Spend the afternoon together testing your pitching skills, and enjoying baseball-themed crafts and photo-ops showing your team spirit. The mascot visit will be 3 to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. Enjoy a T-ball batting game, ice cream and more until 5 p.m.!

Then tour the "Sox vs. Cubs" exhibit to learn about the epic rivalry between Chicago's teams.

Gail Borden Public Library hosts engaging exhibits to create interest in a wide variety of subject matter and to bring people into the library to experience all that the library has to offer. Library staff are excited that over 3,400 people have registered for the "Get in the Game, READ!" summer reading program and over 430,000 minutes of magic (reading) has already captivated local imaginations this summer.

Gail Borden Public Library's annual summer scavenger hunt is slated to be more popular than popcorn and peanuts and Cracker Jack for Elgin-area families looking for a fun summer activity.

Taking place July 1-31, this year's hunt will have families searching for "secret words" accompanying each of 33 custom-painted baseball banks placed in businesses, restaurants, library branches and other venues in the community.

The scavenger hunt is a great way for area residents to explore businesses and restaurants that may be new to them. Scavenger hunt seekers will be visiting venues such as Al's Café, Elgin Public House, Herb's Bakery, KCT Credit Union and Elgin History Museum.

Maps will be available beginning July 1 at any Gail Borden Library location and online at gailborden.info/scavengerhunt. The maps will include addresses and hours of each venue as well as entry form.

Families will have fun by finding 10 secret words to receive a small prize at a Gail Borden Library location. All 33 secret words to be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a baseball-themed gift basket with movies, books and more. The gift basket drawing will take place Aug. 7.

The Grand Slam Scavenger Hunt helps pitch summer reading to the community. The "Get in the Game, READ!" Summer Reading Challenge is for readers of all ages and offers prizes such as a carnival all-ride wristband for summer reading finishers up to 12th grade as well as a chance for a family to win the Family Adventure Prize. Also on the lineup this summer is "Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars" on display at the main library through Aug. 13. Created by the Elmhurst History Museum, the exhibit showcases the rivalry of the two Chicago teams with the addition of fun photo ops and hands-on activities. Library visitors also can discover the contributions of the Negro Leagues and the Rockford Peaches, inspiration for the 1992 movie "A League of Their Own."

The Rakow Branch is located at 2751 W. Bowes Road in Elgin and the South Elgin Branch is 127 S. McLean Blvd.
