Elgin church's 'Proverbial Opera' series continues June 23 with 'Nessun dorma'

At Elgin's First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rick Carlson is continuing a nine-part summer message series entitled "Proverbial Opera," an exploration of King Solomon's wisdom illustrated by arias from the world's great operas.

Each week, a performer will sing a selection from the works of Puccini, Mozart, Offenbach and others.

On Sunday, June 23, week two features well-known local talent Jeorge Holmes singing "Nessun dorma" from the Puccini opera, "Turandot."

Rev. Carlson's message, "Give Your Eyes No Sleep" will be based on Proverbs 6:1-5.

This summer series is offered in collaboration with Fox Valley Lyrical Productions (formerly known as Soiree Lyrique). The service starts at 9 a.m. at the church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in downtown Elgin.

On June 30, soprano Solange Sior will sing "Ebben! Ne andro lontana" from "La Wally" by Alfredo Catalani. This aria was made popular from the 1981 movie "Diva".

Come to the new Saturday contemporary service "The River" at 5 p.m. Saturdays or the traditional service at 9 a.m. Sundays. Free parking is available in the parking deck across the street.
