Adler Center and Libertyville Arts Commission announce new community mural

David Adler Center submission

The David Adler Music and Arts Center and the Libertyville Arts Commission have announced a new Community Movable Mural project and issued a call for mural artists.

The Movable Mural will be painted by the community during the Adler Center's annual Festival of the Arts. A commissioned artist will first prepare a monochromatic coloring book style design. Then, throughout the two-day festival, children and adults of all ages will be invited to paint a segment of the mural with vibrant colors. Paint for the Community Movable Mural will be supplied by Rust-Oleum.

"The Community Movable Mural Project will encourage creative expression and will present a very positive way to interact with your neighbors," said Amy Williams, Adler Center executive director. "We hope everyone at the Festival of the Arts will take part in the project."

This year's inaugural theme is "Where Culture Connects," and celebrates the Adler Center's cultural history and its mission to connect the community to the arts. At the end of the Festival of the Arts, the mural will move to the Adler Center, where it will be prominently displayed until the next Festival of the Arts. The Movable Mural will be a fabrication of three panels constructed out of metal and plywood. Each panel will be 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall.

"The panels will be reused and repainted with new designs each summer," Williams said. "We hope the community will look forward to creating a new mural each year, and that they will stop by to visit their mural throughout the year."

Artists are invited to submit up to three full-color designs for jury consideration. Designs must be able to be translated by a public audience (nonprofessional painters). With theme in mind, the mural should have a fun and lively large-scale graphic design that creates excitement and appeal for the community, using a palette of no more than five to seven colors. All conceptual sketches are to be preliminary and should be able to evolve and transform based on jury input. Designs cannot contain any overt religious representation or representations of profanity, slander, or anything that could be interpreted as offensive. Designs must be politically neutral and cannot include logo pictorial depiction to the advertisement of any product, service, place, person, or business.

Submissions should be made as a PDF presentation (not to exceed 10 MB) with the artist's name, contact information and website present, as applicable. Include artist bio or CV/resume and three examples of previous work.

All submissions due via email to amy@adlercenter.org or by mail or drop off to: David Adler Music & Arts Center, attention Amy Williams, 1700 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville, IL 60048.

Additional information for artists, including compensation information for the artist whose design is selected, is available at www.adlercenter.org. All applications must be received by 11 p.m. Monday, May 27.

The public is invited to paint the mural during the annual Festival of the Arts, held on Aug. 3 and 4 in Libertyville's Cook Park.
