May is skin cancer prevention month. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with the most dangerous kind of skin cancer being melanoma.

The good news is when it's found and treated early, skin cancer can almost always be cured.

With the summer months around the corner, Cook County Health offers tips to prevent skin cancer:

• Avoid UV tanning beds

• Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses

• Seek the shade between 10 am - 4 pm

• Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a sunscreen with an SPF between 30-50

• Re-apply sunscreen to your body every two hours or after swimming or access sweating

Early detection of melanoma can save your life. Carefully examine all of your skin once a month. Talk to your physician if a new or changing spot occurs.
