Barrington Area Council on Aging offering May events

The Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA) offers a wide variety of low-cost programs for seniors. For information about BACOA events, call (847)381-5030. Programs take place at multiple locations in Barrington.

• Lunch and Bingo Program offers older adults the opportunity to play bingo and enjoy conversation in a fun setting. The program is held every Monday from 10:30am-1:00 at the Barrington Park District 235 Lions Drive, Barrington. Participants need to RSVP by the prior Wednesday.

May 6th our "Spring Fling" lunch and bingo is sponsored by the Barrington Junior Women's Club. Entertainment will be provided, and the cost is free.

May 13th and May 27th the cost to play bingo and have lunch is $8.00.

May 20th lunch and bingo is sponsored by Lake Barrington Woods in honor of Older Americans Month. Entertainment will be provided, and the cost is free.

• Cuisine Club provides older adults an opportunity to enjoy lunch with new and old friends at local restaurants at a set price. The group will be meeting Tuesday, May 21st at ZaZa's Tavola Italiana 5047 Shoreline Rd. Barrington at noon. Cost is $25. RSVP before Wednesday, May 15th at (847)381-5030.

• Knitting &Crafting Club meets at Cook Street Coffee 100 E. Station St. Barrington on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of this month. Come and knit while you socialize and drink coffee. Cost is free.

• Hiking Club meets the 3rd Thursday of every month till October at 9:30am. This month, we will meet at Crabtree Nature Center 3 Stover Road, Barrington. Come out and walk with a guide for an hour and enjoy the scenery. Please call BACOA to reserve your spot, (847)381-5030.

• Harper College and BACOA have teamed up to present engaging classes at its Lifelong Learning Institute. Registration is required online at ce.harpercollege.edu or by phoning (847)925-6300. All classes are from 1:30-3:30pm. Fee is $38.

May 9: History of the 7 Barrington Suburbs- Dr. Sharon Kissane has conducted extensive research including over 400 interviews with Barrington-area residents. She'll share the fascinating history of the seven sister suburbs. You'll enjoy rich anecdotes from heartfelt to humorous and a few scandal stories along the way. To be held at the Park District 235 Lions Drive, Barrington.

May 23 & 30: The Presidency of Harry Truman- Pulled onto the world stage with little experience or preparations, President Truman faced more significant challenges than any other President (except Lincoln). This 2 part class is sure to give you a new appreciation of POTUS 33.

• Alzheimer's/Caregivers Support Group: This group is designed to support care partners of people with Alzheimer's, other dementias and health-challenged friends or loved ones. Meets the second Wednesday of each month, 10:30-Noon at Lutheran Church of Atonement, 909 E. Main Street, Barrington. Cost is Free. Registration is required, please call (847)381-5030.

• Low Vision Support Group provides practical information, emotional support and motivation for individuals living with restricted vision. It meets the 2nd Thursday of each month from 1:00pm-2:30pm. We meet at Lake Barrington Woods Community Room, 22320 Classic Court, Lake Barrington. Cost is free.

• "A Day Out" Program is an upbeat social setting for people with early-stage memory loss or other health issues. Our program combines group discussions on current events, art projects, music therapy, light exercise and more. Meets every Monday and Thursday, 10:00-2:30pm. It is held at the Lutheran Church of Atonement 909 E. Main Street, Barrington. Cost is $45/day. Registration is required: call (847)381-5030.

• Memory Café is now partnering with the Ela Public library in Lake Zurich to provide an informal, unstructured social program for people with mild or early-stage memory loss and their care companions. Participants can have fun learning and interacting in a modern library setting. This program begins May 21st (third Tuesday of every month) from 10:00am-11:30am at Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. Cost is free. • BACOA has partnered with Lake County Forest Preserves to present Butterfly Gardening. Come join us and learn what influences the butterfly population, ways to attract more butterflies to your garden, and how can gardeners help butterflies. This presentation will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 10:00am-11:00am at the Barrington Area Library 505 N. Northwest Highway in the Zimmerman room. Cost is free. • Easy Riders is BACOA's new transportation program for seniors in the Barrington Area. Transportation should be requested one week in advance. Call (847)381-5030 to schedule a ride.
