Martial arts take center stage at Palatine festival

On Saturday, April 6, an epic tournament is coming to Palatine - the 20th annual Samurang Games & Martial Arts Festival hosted by JP Wood Martial Arts America.

This year, JP Wood is looking to break last year's record of almost 600 medals awarded in the festival contests alone. Grand champions will also be awarded in forms, self-defense, and select festival contests.

This unique tournament and festival competition features events including martial arts forms, weapon forms, self-defense tactical and self-defense entertainment, Taekwondo sparring, Gumdo soft sword sparring and Padded one stick sparring, all from various martial art styles.

The skill contests include power board breaking, jumping high kick, fast kicking, paper cutting, spinning hook kick, warrior obstacle course and more.

"We're thrilled once again to bring this event to Palatine. The talent of these athletes is outstanding, the excitement in the air is invigorating, and the smiles on everyone's faces are contagious," said Grand Master John P. Wood of JP Wood Martial Arts America.

This event will be held at Falcon Park Recreational Center, 2195 Hicks Road, in Palatine, and feature a full day of 16 contests and events. Doors open at 9:30 a.m., with festival events open at 10 a.m. Competitors will range in age this year from 4 years through adults.
