• Congratulations to Winnie Sluga, who will celebrate her 100th birthday on Monday, Feb. 18. Winnie, who was born and raised in Chicago, is a 43-year resident of Arlington Heights and a parishioner of St. James Catholic Church.

She lives independently in the home that she shared with her husband of more than 65 years. Winnie enjoys baking, word searches, a good game of cards and spending time with her family in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In her younger days, she was an avid fisherwoman, enjoyed a challenging puzzle and has always loved to be on the go; whether it be a trip to the lake, Randhurst, the Hallmark or the grocery store.

Traditionally, at 5 p.m. on any Sunday, you would find all 23 of Winnie's relatives at her home for Sunday dinner. Up until the young age of 93, she was always cooking. Today, the house is still filled with lots of frequent visits by her family and neighbors and the cookie and candy jars remain filled with homemade goodies.

Asked what the secret is to living a long, happy and healthy life, Winnie responded, "Being surrounded by family and friends, daily prayers, eating well and the occasional Manhattan cocktail."

She averaged 1.92 kills per set, 1.71 digs per set and a .268 hitting percentage, earning spots on the NJCAA Region IV All-Region Team and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Volleyball All-Conference Team.
